Why Do I Hurt? Chiropractic Care for Chronic Pain

Pain is a part of life. Even those who don’t engage in risky sports or other activities can have pain resulting from falls, car crashes or workplace accidents and overuse of certain joints and muscles.  You can even have pain from engaging too frequently in seemingly sedentary activities like working at a computer or clicking a remote control!

But chronic pain that doesn’t go away after weeks, months or even years of rest or treatment, can greatly affect quality of life, resulting in the inability to perform work duties and normal household tasks, or engage in many physical and social activities.

Some individuals, older people in particular, deal wth regular chronic pain without any past injury to which they can trace it and no signs of specific or unusual wear and tear to their bodies.  It can come in the form of headaches, back, neck or knee pain, and arthritis, and the inability to even explain the pain only leads to frustration.

To add literal insult to injury, studies show that nearly 80 percent of chronic pain sufferers will have some form of depression, which only compounds any disability and lowers the chances that any treatment will be successful.

But in many cases, chronic pain is the result of misalignment of the spine or unusual pressure on the nerves, causing an interruption in nervous system communication from the brain to the rest of the body.

That is why chiropractic manipulation should be part of any overall healing plan.  The most common non-surgical treatment for chronic back pain, chiropractic can also alleviate many other ailments.  This healing science places an emphasis on maintaining structural integrity of the spine and nervous system, the body system that controls every aspect of our life experience; Mood, digestion, immunity and healing, as well as how well we respond to stress and aging are entirely dependent on a balanced nervous system.  An experienced chiropractor can relieve pressure and detect and correct blockages, misalignments, and tension that cause interruptions to the proper functioning of this integral body system.

Proper alignment of the spine is necessary in order for the brain to send a signal down the spinal cord to muscles, ligaments, tendons and organs. Chiropractic adjustment should be used to treat chronic, even when the pain is focused in other parts of the body.

In addition, therapeutic chiropractic adjustment and massage to affected areas, such as the back, neck, and knee, enhances blood flow, reduces stress and relieves tension.  It also flushes the body of substances that may contribute to pain. Many studies show massage provides long-lasting relief for patients suffering from chronic low back pain, promotes relaxation and alleviates the perception of pain and anxiety in hospitalized cancer patients, and reduces pain and muscle spasms in post-surgical patients who have multiple incisions.

Chiropractic care can be a valuable part of any pain management plan, and just may provide relief when other therapies, procedures and medications have failed.  Give Dr. Amanda Massey at Infinity Wellness Center a call.
