Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which the tiny islets of the endometrium, which is the inner lining of the uterus, becomes scattered and grow in areas they do not belong. These cells can grow in the outer surface of the uterus, the colon, the bladder, and the sides of the pelvic cavity. When we cycle each month, these islets of endometrium respond to the ovarian hormones as they are suppose to, as if the were within the uterus. They enlarge, swell, and bleed. This causes severe pain around the time of menses; it can also cause painful intercourse and painful bowel movements. Often times the pain can be debilitating. Endometriosis can cause a disruption in function, severe inflammation, adhesions, and scarring of the areas it is found.

Common Symptoms of Endometriosis

  • Menstrual pain and cramps
  • PMS
  • Low Back Pain
  • Leg Pain
  • Painful Intercourse
  • Infertility
  • Heavy Bleeding with Clots
  • Premenstrual Spotting
  • Irregular Periods
  • Constipation, painful bowel movements
  • Rectal Bleeding
  • Inflammation, adhesions, scarring
  • Anemia form heavy bleeding
  • Endometrial cysts

There are many theories of the cause of Endometriosis. There is a theory labeled Retrograde Menstruation Theory that states some of the menstrual blood backs up through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvic cavity. Estrogen Dominance is also involved in exacerbation and possibly causative of endometriosis because estrogen causes excessive growth of uterine tissue. Xeno-hormone exposure to synthetic hormones such as xeno-estrogens (hormones found in our meats, beauty products, cleaning solutions, and other everyday used items) may play a causative role as well. One very interesting fact to link this connection is that Endometriosis seems to be a disease of the twentieth century, about the time we have increased our exposure to Xeno-hormones.

Endometriosis is difficult to diagnose. There is not a laboratory test to identify the endometrial islets, nor are they large enough to show on an x-ray or ultrasound. A Laparoscopy is the only way to clinically diagnose Endometriosis. A laparoscopy is an invasive surgical procedure that allows the surgeon to look into the abdomen with a small scope. Symptoms are the best way to suspect Endometriosis.

Conventional medicine treatment is not very successful and very difficult. Surgical attempt to remove each and every endometrial implant through out the pelvis is only temporarily successful. Another radical treatment is a full hysterectomy to stop the ovulation process.

Natural Treatment for Endometriosis

Because Estrogen Dominance plays a roll in Endometriosis, Natural Hormones balancing is considered using Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy along with avoiding Xeno-hormone exposure, increasing immune function and addressing the inflammation present. This treatment requires patience. Over time, usually 4-6 months, monthly pain begins to subside and healing of the site occurs. The pain may not disappear entirely, but it certainly becomes more tolerable as the islets lessen. Women with endometriosis who have children later in life may have trouble conceiving due to the endometrial tissue building up on top of endometrial tissue. An interesting fact about Endometriosis, it’s often naturally cured by pregnancy and menopause.
