Male menopause, or andropause, is becoming more and more accepted today. Men can become estrogen dominant just as women. With the tremendous pressure felt from having to perform in a day to day aggressive workplace, raise children into older ages, provide for a family with greater and more expensive needs than ever, men can find themselves exhausted, depleted and depressed. We also know testosterone can decline as men age and are under huge amounts of stress. We test these hormones in saliva testing just like we do for women – but looking at it much differently.
Adrenal exhaustion is commonplace, most men will find that if they begin a support program with proper nutrtion, most symptoms will disappear quickly.
The adrenal glands secrete androgens called dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and androstenedione (which can metabolize to testosterone or estradiol), and also glucocorticoids, the major one being cortisol. During adrenal stress, the ratio of cortisol to DHEA will be extremely high.
DHEA, which is also tested in saliva, is thought to reflect vitality, and is sometimes called the “anti-aging” hormone. Deepak Chopra notes a correlation of DHEA and youthful properties, and also notes that people who meditate seem to have higher levels of this substance circulating in their blood.
